Safeway Demolishing Marina-style Vons (former Safeway) WLA

Demolishing in 2011. 10 months construction. Modeled after the new West Hollywood Pavilions.

This store's air conditioning system has stunk for decades. The musty smell will not be missed. Nor will the ugly stores attached to it in the little complex. There use to be a Thrifty Jr. next door to Vons (Safeway).

Good competion to the remodeled Ralphs Fresh Fare (last year) on Olympic & Barrington which just got competition from a new Trader Joe's/Walgreens project that recently opened across the street on Olympic Blvd. with rooftop parking.

I gather they will eventually close down the Pavilions on Wilshire Blvd. between Stoner and Granville.

Looks like a good improvement. What is the condition of the Pavilions that is going to also be closing after this replacement is done?

It's in good shape. The problem is it has very high rent.

Originally there was a very successful Market Basket on the property that became a Ralphs. When the lease expired the owners of the property decided to build a high-rise office building on the property with a supermarket in the back that contains underground parking and a small lot in front that is very difficult to access. As a result the store was never able to achieve the volume it had as a Market Basket/Ralphs and because of the high operating costs has never been more than modestly profitable. The Vons is only five blocks away but has always been hampered by the fact it's a dump. This will definitely be a high volume store for them when it's done and is long overdue.
