Hannaford closing MA store

Post by marketreportblog »

Hannaford is closing their location in Marlborough, MA, a small city between Worcester and Framingham in eastern Central Mass. The store opened in the late 90s as a Victory Markets, a local chain then acquired by Hannaford in 2004. The 55,000 square foot store is across town from a Market 32, and just a couple miles from a Shaw's, Stop & Shop, and Market Basket in Hudson. I'm going to post pictures and more info on my blog this weekend from my recent visit.

Rumor has it -- this hasn't been confirmed anywhere -- that Shaw's has acquired the lease and will be moving in when Hannaford closes. This would be the first new Shaw's in quite some time, and if I'm not mistaken the last one they opened was that Hudson location which they acquired from Hannaford in the Ahold Delhaize merger. They've also recently added two stores in eastern Mass, but both were previously Star Markets that they converted to Shaw's.

This would bring Hannaford's store count in Massachusetts down to just 15 stores, most of which were acquired from either the Victory purchase or their acquisition of Alexander's, a chain with stores in the Lowell area. Shaw's would have 55 Mass stores, plus 21 Star Markets, although Hannaford's sister chain Stop & Shop has a whopping 117.

No, the only store Albertsons acquired in the merger was a Giant in Maryland (reopened as ACME). The Massachusetts Hannaford stores that were divested were sold to Big Y.

Good catch, thanks. Looks like the store closed around the time of, but not related to, the merger and Shaw's opened shortly after Hannaford closed.
