marketreportblog wrote: November 18th, 2024, 4:50 pm Here's a wide survey of 24 supermarkets in the northeast with a basket of sample Thanksgiving items. Not exhaustive, and note that there are variations in price between locations even within one chain and that many of these prices are sales rather than everyday prices, but it's an interesting comparison nonetheless.

Coming in at just $35 is a Key Food on Staten Island -- but for that price, you'd need to spend at least $75 for turkey at 0.49/lb. On the other end of the spectrum is a whopping $113 for the same order at a Kings in New Jersey. The turkey prices vary wildly, from $0.39/lb up to $2.99/lb, so I've also included a total without the turkey for comparison. Without a turkey, the order comes to $23 at a SuperFresh in New Jersey (also a Key Food store) on the low end and $66 on the high end -- still at Kings.
Maybe even more interesting that you could buy that $75 worth of stuff at Key, then pay the $35 for the meal and STILL be spending less than the Kings prices (by $3) - plus you'd have quite a bit of extra stuff to use the rest of the week :)

Trader Joe's Fearless Flyer pricing for whole turkey —
Fresh young: price not stated
Glatt branded kosher: $3.49/lb
Brined: $2.49/lb
Organic: $3.99/lb

Other turkey options -
Brined, bone-in half turkey (includes compound butter, rosemary): $4.99/lb, each 4-6 lb.
Brined, bone-in half turkey breast, cooked, sous-vide style: $9.99/lb, each is approximately 2.5 lb.

No frozen options sold.
(according to America's Test Kitchen, the flash-frozen birds are actually "tastier" than fresh counterparts)

If you thought that $113 total from Kings was high, how about getting a turkey from Stew Leonard's in CT/NY?

They had two sitting in a case in the store in Danbury with the price written on them in marker, and that turkey price by itself was around that $113 range!

Now, didn't see what they were (type, organic etc.), but they were certainly on the large side - looked like something that would require a small restaurant full of diners to even have a chance of consuming even a large portion of it.

That's quite a turkey. I'm seeing local turkeys at Stew Leonard's $1.99/lb. Not sure if that's the type of turkey you saw in store, but that's on the high end but not at all the highest. Also worth noting that it's the only local turkey I have seen -- unless another chain is selling local turkeys that they're not labeling as local. I left out several higher-end stores, such as Stew Leonard's and Uncle Giuseppe's, where turkeys are $3.49/lb. But stores like that don't always have the full list, so I didn't include them.

Maybe a little off topic, but the turkey prices I'm seeing in SoCal are an insight to the future of supermarkets after this merger stuff is settled.

In my opinion both Kroger and Albertsons are both weak operators and continue to reduce market share even if this merger goes through.

Ralphs has 49 cents per pound for Kroger turkey. Vons has the same for one Signature turkey. Pavilions isn't even selling Signature turkey and the cheapest I could find at my local Pavilions was $1.29 for frozen Butterball.

Meanwhile... Vallarta, (yes the hispanic supermarket) has an add for 24 cents per lb for turkey. Amazon Fresh (former Ralphs) has flyer mailed to you that has 39 cents lb for turkeys.

Though from what I am seeing, the 0.49/lb is still a pretty hot retail- it is below cost. I'm seeing retails closer to the 0.89/lb range in less competitive markets (whether or not that is below cost depends on the chain; it is below cost for an independent store or small chain).

No minimum purchase.
I was wondering about that too. No alcohol or turkey at self checkout. Alcohol is California law, but why turkey?

My only guess is the scales don't go high enough for the larger turkeys.

It looks like WinCo does not scan turkey. They enter in a PLU code and weigh the turkey on the register. They must not think the customer can do that. Maybe they are concerned the customer will not place the turkey on the scanner properly so the entire weight will be read.
