Stop & Shop closes all delis

Post by storewanderer »

No other chain has responded to the Boars Head Listeria issue like this. Including other Ahold chains.

Deli sells many items not impacted by this.

Who is in charge of Stop & Shop? One terrible decision after another.

Closing all delis chain-wide is pretty extreme. It also seems like a great way to drive customers to, I don't know, the competition, maybe?

Sounds like they're using the Boar's Head fiasco to cut costs and shut down less-profitable delis.

The article states that the closures are temporary until the "situation is resolved." Seems like it has been resolved, though. The product has been recalled and destroyed and the delis have been cleaned. What else is there to do?

The article was posted to Retail Wire on August 12 stating they had closed all of the delis due to the situation.

I wonder if Retail Wire is reporting it late.

I agree it doesn't make sense to close them...

Maybe you go in and deal with cleaning and clearing out the impacted product which sort of interrupts operations maybe? But you don't have to close the deli to do that, exactly. You could, I don't know, have store management go help out with it. Or maybe pay deli employees some overtime to do it before deli opens for the day or after deli closes for the night.

Yes, this is old news and all the delis have been reopened (at least all the delis I've seen in stores). A couple other chains have also closed certain delis -- for instance, some ShopRites sell Boar's Head and some don't, and I saw at least one ShopRite close and clean the deli and then reopen it. Stop & Shop is struggling, but this definitely isn't a sign of that, I think they're actually handling it very well.

Also, shouldn't this be in the northeastern forum? Stop & Shop doesn't have any stores in the mid-Atlantic.

Uh, New Jersey? That's certainly along the Atlantic! The rest could fall under Northeastern.

Of course! But by the division of states on this board, NJ is northeastern, not mid-Atlantic :)
